Jeff the Great: "Stupid is as Stupid Does"
Not sure why but I seem to come across stupid people, saying and doing stupid things, just about every day. Maybe its me, I mean common sense might be too much to ask for.
This morning I went to Starbucks for my usual venti drip coffee with walking room. Now, I hate the new Pike Place blend...its about 1 step above 3 hour old Denny's coffee if you ask me. Starbucks knows this, they created the new blend to appeal to a wider audience, those that aren't into the strong premium coffee we drink up here in the Northwest.
I normally ask for the 'alternate brew.' They almost NEVER have a pot of it to sell to me. So, I end up with the hated Pike Place blend. Today when I asked for the alternate brew they again told me they didn't have enough for a venti.
I said to the Starbucks employee: "Why is it that you never have enough of the alternate brew when I ask for it?"
His response: "Oh, that's because we only brew enough for about 2 cups of coffee."
Are you kidding me?! I didn't care what the actual answer was, I was trying to make a point! Does it take a rocket scientist to figure out that maybe you should brew more?
He was so proud of himself for answering the question. Little did he understand that he looked like an idiot.

That was a funny story. You should go easy on those guys.
Thanks, anonymous...you too.
You'd probably also like to read my other post on starbucks here: http://jeffthegreat.blogspot.com/2006/09/jeff-great-takes-over-starbucks.html
You know what else I hate? I hate it when the Starbucks employee just looks at me waiting for my order, instead of saying something like "What can I make for you today?" or "How are you, what would you like to order?" Have we totally lost our customer service skills.
What I do then is just stare at them until they finally ask me what I'd like. Its pretty funny when they get uncomfortable while I stare back at their silence for 15-20 seconds.
Cheers!
Jeff, it sounds like you're just going to the wrong Starbucks. I quit going to Starbucks near the end of summer, shortly after Chris the barrista learned my name. A couple of weeks ago, after not going in for a couple of months, I walked in the door. Chris looks up, sees me, and says, "Hey Brent, good to see you. Want your regular?" That's customer service. :-)
So, I know your main idea was about stupid people but I wanted to comment on Starbucks. If Starbucks never has the "alternate brew" then why don't you try another coffee place that you like? I have been going to Java Generations for a few years now and in my opinion the coffee is better and the customer service is better. Do people go to Starbucks just because of the name? Java Generations is right next to a Starbucks and at 7:30a.m. there is a long line at Java and 1 or 2 people at Starbucks. I think that says something! So, I challenge you, Jeff the Great, to go out your comfort zone and try a new coffee shop!
